Gray Iron Castings from Pacific Alloy Casting Co., Los Angeles, California
Specification for Gray Iron Castings – ASTM – A-48 Gray Iron
Gray iron is an alloy of carbon, silicon and iron. The first cast iron, gray iron is the most versatile of all foundry metals. The high carbon content makes gray iron easier to melt, cast and machine than other iron alloys.
Castings made of gray iron are intended for general industrial applications including: engine blocks, pump housings, valve bodies, electrical boxes and decorative castings.
Castings are classified on the basis of the tensile strength of the iron in separately cast test bars.
