Austempered Ductile Iron Castings from Pacific Alloy, Los Angeles, CA
Austempered Ductile Iron Castings – ASTM A-897A
Austempered ductile iron is produced by heat-treating cast ductile iron to which small amounts of nickel, molybdenum or copper have been added. The result is a product that has twice the tensile and yield strengths and 50 percent higher fatigue strength than standard ductile irons.
The lower hardness grades of ADI work well in structural applications where weight and cost reduction are important. The higher hardness grades of ADI are ideal for wear applications such as mining, construction and agriculture.
ADI can be used as a substitute for manganese steel and nickel-chrome iron. It is stronger than aluminum and weighs less. It is lighter and easier to cast than steel and costs less to produce.
Another advantage of ADI is its machinability. It can be machined in the soft as-cast or annealed state before being heat treated saving time and money.
